Design Development:  Solutions using High Level Technologies for a rural village in the Philippines.

1. Real World Technologies : Digital communications technology, "internet of things", social media, in-memory computing technology.
2. Purpose of talk : to present exploited technological improvements in the well-being of marginal rural communities in the Philippines.
3. Target audience : decision makers, interactive implement of these technologies, and potential investors/sponsors.
4. Audience will leave with an appreciation of the problems faced by these communities, and some of the opportunities offered by digital technologies.

In the town of Kuyaoyao found in the province of Quezon, almost where Calabarzon and Bikol borders, there is need to create awareness, offer sanitary solutions, and provide tools that promote self preservation. Having its remote location is hidden in deep jungles southeast of the Capital of Manila.  Kuyaoyao's very small population has remained invisible on a regional stage. Its only survival relies on nearby towns such as Madlandongan, San Lorenzo and Pinalandungan.   Situated on the foot of hill, surrounded by waterways and a small river delta, and lost in random rows of coconut trees, it can barely be seen.   You can find this quiet 300 member village, just east of Calauag, having its closest major towns to include Lucerna, San Pablo, Lipa and Calamba. 

The meager population of Kuyaoyao survive by basic farming and fishing (coconuts, a little livestock and a few fields). Thick, dense and humid jungle, lack of roads, and dry seasons contrasting with  torrential monsoons present challenges to survival risking Kuyaoyao dwindling to a 'ghost village'. Many opportunities for diversifying the activities of the village and increasing its prosperity have been discussed, including visitor attractions (diving - coral reefs are nearby, marina, retail/visitor center), local resources (e.g. library, health centre) and new farming initiatives (such as a fish hatchery).

Like many similar towns, Kuyaoyao looks to exploit the capabilities of technology for a brighter future - from interchangeable wells to cellular towers. Digital media, IOT, social media and the 'information age' are considered key enabling factors.  In-memory computing is the storage of information in the main random access memory (RAM) of dedicated servers rather than in complicated relational databases operating on comparatively slow disk drives. In-memory computing helps business customers, including retailers, banks and utilities, to quickly detect patterns, analyze massive data volumes on the fly, and perform their operations quickly. The drop in memory prices in the present market is a major factor contributing to the increasing popularity of in-memory computing technology. This has made in-memory computing economical among a wide variety of applications.

Many technology companies are making use of bringing technology like the in-memory computing technology developed by SAP, called High-Speed Analytical Appliance (HANA).  It is with those that a technique called sophisticated data compression to store data in the random access memory. HANA's performance is 10,000 times faster when compared to standard disks, which allows companies to analyze data in a matter of seconds instead of long hours.  These advantages offer almost instant real time advantages for how villages might order new supplies, in terms of quantify, and ease.  Recorded values would help maximize output, minimize waste.

  • The ability to cache countless amounts of data constantly. This ensures extremely fast response times for searches.
  • The ability to store session data, allowing for the customization of live sessions and ensuring optimum website performance.

C Tito Young has a long time background in Web Content Development, CAD, Software Testing, VR, Visualization. He is an artist, educator, technical consultant, and interaction design. His solution has been used in shrinkwrap, marketing and often attacks the kinds of projects most people avoid. He is a Bay Area team member at Amy Robotics Limited, but currently, doubles as the Chief Operations Officer for a non-profit that has been finding technical solutions for a rural village in the Philippines. It is here he has visions in bringing technology solutions to a table for real-world use and testing. For example, he is seeking IOT solutions for the areas of water quality, weather, tracking of farming, coral reef awareness, security, eco-village development, fisheries aquaponics and the seeking of distillation potentials while politically combining aspects of other nearby villages. He has established with his team invented ways to maximize use of current or emerging technologies. He currently lives in Emeryville, loves art and music.
